"The Springerle House grew out of a family's traditions, and one little
girl's dream. My grandfather used to take my mom to Lancaster's Central
Market when she was a little girl. She remembers the colorful displays of
fresh produce and homemade baked goods for sale; the dazzling assortment of
fresh flowers made the visits even more fun. Pappy, as we called my
grandfather, had his favorite stands: the ring bologna at S. Clyde Weaver's
was a must - as well as some fresh cuts of meat from C.Z. Martin. Central
Market has always been a community treasure: neighbors nod to each other
over steaming cups of coffee and plan their week's menus while shopping at
stands whose owners remember their customers' names. As Mom and Pappy did
their weekly shopping, she secretly planned that someday she would have her
own market stand..she would be one of those friendly people who help to make
the market experience such a wonderful one. Years passed, and as I grew up,
my mom took me to market. I remember us purchasing many of the same things
Pappy used to, but Mom discovered new stands as well, and we enjoyed our
time together, just the two of us, on Saturday mornings. During the
Christmas season, live music could be heard drifting through the beautiful
market building, and I remember thinking that this was one of the most
pleasant places in the world to be. After I married my husband, he and I
would take Saturday morning jaunts to the market, where we'd splurge on
fresh flowers and chat with fellow shoppers. It seemed like such a natural
thing to open a stand there myself, selling something that's been such a
part of our family, in a place that's always meant so much to us. We've been
there seven years now, and I can honestly say that the excitement of
shopping at market, going to market, and being a part of market has never
worn off. I do believe it never will."
